Founded in 1999 by Mark Pestana, ICM Architectural Studio was established with a strong foundation in Industrial, Commercial, and Motor Dealership architecture. While these sectors remain central to the practice, ICM has since delivered extensive retail projects and a wide range of other building typologies, successfully undertaking both highly complex developments and smaller, more bespoke commissions. The practice regularly acts as Principal Agent—providing a level of project leadership, technical oversight, and delivery expertise that has become increasingly rare within the profession.
With over 26 years of experience, ICM has built a solid reputation for reliability and technical competence, delivering projects for large corporates, listed property funds, and private clients alike. The studio is personally led by its directors, with hands-on involvement throughout every project, ensuring consistent attention, accountability, and clear communication regardless of scale.
ICM’s approach extends well beyond design. The practice brings a thorough understanding of cost, buildability, statutory processes, and construction delivery, guiding projects from initial concept through to successful completion. Mark Pestana is a Johannesburg local, born and raised in the city he continues to shape through his work. He began his architectural career at TC Design in 1984, progressing to an Associate role in 1993 before moving on as an Associate with ARC Architects in 1994. In 1999, drawing on decades of experience across a wide range of projects, he founded ICM Architectural Studio, where he continues to lead with a strong focus on thoughtful design, technical excellence, and a deep understanding of the local context.
Claude Heyes completed his Master’s degree in Architecture at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2014. He relocated to Johannesburg in 2015 to join ICM Architectural Studio as a Candidate Architect, where his career progressed rapidly, leading to his appointment as Associate in 2019. Recognised for his strong technical expertise, leadership, and commitment to design excellence, Claude continued to advance within the practice and was appointed Director in 2022.
